Jesus, High Priest

Everything in the Old Testament ins a foreshadowing of the salvation that was to come through Jesus. The law was given to prove to the people how incapable they were of following it. The temple was set up to show the people that God was set apart and anyone who wanted to worship him must be set apart. The high priest was appointed to stand in the gap between the people and God for their sins. The system of sacrifice was set in place to show the people that God does not tolerate sin, but that he offers a way of escape for any who choose it.

Everything before Jesus, was proof that we need Jesus.

The high priest was the most important person in Israel in the Old Testament. He was the one who stood in place of all the people of Israel for their sins. There simply was no other way. The alternative was death because of sin. Understanding all of this only serves to make Jesus more precious too me. The weight of what I could never erase through law or ceremony weighs heavy on my heart, but the joy of what Jesus has done makes me want to weep. In the system of the law, only the high priest was allowed to enter into the most holy place, the place where God himself dwelt. Once a year, he would go into that place and present the blood of the sacrifice to atone for the sins of the people. This was the way that God's wrath was appeased toward the people for their sin. Appeased but not satisfied. God wanted satisfaction though. He wanted peace between himself and his creation. He wanted restoration.

So he poured his own wrath on himself and finally...there was satisfaction.

I think I forget sometimes, that God is not mad at me for my failure. I forget that he doesn't look on me and see my sin. All he sees is the blood of Jesus. Don't allow the enemy to deceive you into believing that you have to do something to be saved! Pride tells us that we have some power in us to do enough and be enough to find salvation...but that is a lie. Salvation comes through Jesus, the high priest of God, nothing more and nothing less.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess." Hebrews 4:14
