I Love You Because You Are Mine

Last night, Allen was tickling and being silly with our girls, when he stopped and told them that he was so glad to be their daddy. Lacey then asked him a question that struck me.

"Why, Daddy? Why do you love me?"

Wow. Talk about the innocence of a child. Of course, daddy answered.

"I love you because you are mine."

He said all the other stuff we all say, "you're funny, you're beautiful..." but it was that line that struck me. He loves these two little girls because they are his. It doesn't matter what they look like, how they act, what they say...he loves them because they are his.

Oh, Jesus.

Do you ever find yourself wondering why it is that God loves you, so? In our human mind, we try to equate love with something. It's hard not to do that with God. We can't help ourselves...we are a messed up bunch. We just assume that God loves us because of how we do, what we do, where we go, what we say. It's not that way, though....not at all.

I did not have a good father daughter thing growing up. My journey to God's heart has been long and painful. I have come to this one truth, though, that I do believe will never change, no matter what I do:

I am his, and he loves me.

We all want to belong, don't we? Even my little four year old who has no clue yet about the selfishness of man, the wickedness we are capable of...even she wants to belong. Even she wants to feel the security of real love. The world is full of cheap imitations of love. Girls so often think they will find it in bed with a boy. People kill themselves for fame and fortune, thinking it will fill their souls. So many ways...and all will leave a soul empty. Not just empty, but wasted. All our attempts to find love outside of God will be nothing more than a sordid affair. We will always walk away broken, empty and full of shame.

Are you wondering today if you are really loved by anyone? Do you ever wonder that? I know now, what I did not know before. I know now that my God loves me simply because I am his. I rest in that now. I find peace, joy, complete acceptance...in him only. I will never earn it, and I can't run from it. His love is deeper than I can dig and higher than I can climb. I hope you will believe that in your own heart, for it will set you free if you do. Ask him, ask him every day if you must. Ask him why he loves you...and his answer will always be the same...

"Why do you love me?"

"I love you because you are mine."
